Trick or Cheap

Immortal Hulk  Tomb of Dracula  Ghost Rider

The Marvel Halloween Sale  runs through Monday 10/26.

When we make fun of Marvel’s sale schedule as being on autopilot and braindead, a Halloween sale that runs through the 26th only is right up there. Real Works of Genius territory. Also, Gerber’s Man-Thing is curiously absent from the Halloween Sale. We hope the intern wasn’t in charge?

This is, to an extent, a sale of sales:

Hulk

Yes, The Hulk has been a horror character in recent years and they’ve also been at or near the top of the various Hulk runs.

  • Immortal Hulk – Al Ewing / Joe Bennett; A stone cold classic
  • Incredible Hulk – Phillip Kennedy Johnson / Nic Klein; The recent return to horror

Tomb of Dracula / Blade

It’s not clear you can call Tomb of Dracula an under-the-radar 70s classic anymore, since it’s gotten a fair amount of exposure since the Essentials line (finally) collected it ~20 years ago, but now it’s in color reprints. One note, though – you need to give the series six or seven issues to get moving. There were some false starts until Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan were paired up… but after they’ve got a couple issues under their belt, this one really takes off.

Blade: Black & White is a collection of… that’s right, the black & white adventures over the years and is built around some magazine appearances in Vampire Tales and Marvel Preview. Wolfman and Chris Claremont are the primary writers for that period. Colan and Tony DeZuniga are the primary artists.

If you’re looking for something has resembles the film franchise a bit more, there’s Blade: The Complete Collection by Marc Guggenheim (with Howard Chaykin as artist).

For something completely out of left field, J.M. DeMatteis, Steve Leialoha and Mark Badger present Greenberg the Vampire. He tries to avoid drinking blood, loves his Mama and occasionally has writer’s block. No Dracula or Blade, but we’ll indulge.

Ghost Rider

Marvel Monsters

Spider-Woman

  • Spider-Woman – Mark Gruenwald / Michael Fleisher / Chris Claremont / Carmen Infantino / Steve Leialoha; Probably in here for the Werewolf appearances, nonetheless, 70s/80s Spider-Woman was a deeply strange book.

There’s quite a bit more in the sale, just not runs. Werewolf by Night shows up in a lot of Moon Knight titles. Dracula shows up all over the place, too.

What isn’t an Event These Days?

One World Under Doom  Imperial  Civil War [Marvel Premier Collection]

The Select Marvel Universe Events Sale runs through Monday, 10/26.

There is a LOT more to this sale with Event tie-in books, so we’re going to hit the Event highlights and maybe a more relevant tie-in book or two. (Not all tie-ins are created equal.)

You’d Think There Was a TV Show…

Vision and the Scarlet Witch   Avengers West Coast  The Vision

The Marvel Vision Sale runs through Monday, 10/26.

Quite a bit here.

The value buy here is Vision & The Scarlet Witch: The Saga of Wanda and Vision. It’s a sort of faux-Epic Edition, clocking in at 467 pages and including the wedding of Wanda and Vision from Giant-Size Avengers #4, the ’82 Bill Mantlo/Rick Leonardi mini-series and the ’85 Steve Englehart/Richard Howell 12-parter.

Vision: The Complete Series – Tom King / Gabriel Hernandez Walta. After his split with Wanda, The Vision moves to the suburbs with a synthezoid wife and two synthezoid kids in tow? What could go wrong? Plenty, as his new world slowly unravels. Probably the best early King book.

Avengers Epic Collection: Behold… The Vision – starts out with the classic two-part debut of The Vision (ending in “Evan an Android Can Cry). This volume is essentially the middle third of the Roy Thomas run. John Buscema / Barry Windsor Smith / Gene Colan / Sal Buscema era. Plenty of Ultron and the debuts of the Squadron Sinister and Invaders towards the end.

Avengers: Absolute Vision – Book One and Book Two – Roger Stern / Al Milgrom / Bob Hall; contain a long arc (that mostly executes in the second volume) where the Vision goes slightly mad and tries to take over the world’s computers.

Avengers West Coast Epic Collection: Vision Quest has Wanda’s original heel-turn in John Byrne’s run that was an influence on the earlier TV show. (It also has the end of the Englehart run and that counts for something, too.)

Which is also to say there are a lot of the original Avengers and West Coast Avengers volumes on sale.

Avengers Inc.: Action, Mystery, Adventure by Al Ewing / Leonard Kirk is absolutely wonderful and the endcap to a trilogy along with Ant-Man: Ant-Iversary and Wasp: Small Worlds (which is not on sale).

Did Anybody Card These Heroes?

Young Avengers  Young Avengers  Avengers: The Children's Crusade

The Marvel Young Avengers Sale runs through Monday, 10/26.

We can sum this sale up succinctly. You’re looking at three volumes:

The creator names are even in the title(s)!

Seriously, though: the Heinberg/Cheung original series was a buzz book that seemed to come out of nowhere when it dropped. Hulking and Wiccan have gone on to get pretty fully integrated into the Marvel Universe.

A few related titles also in the sale:

Pee Wee? Is That You?

Nova  Champions  Champions Classic: The Complete Collection

The Marvel Nova (Sam Alexander) Sale runs through Monday 10/26.

This would be the kid version of Nova that debuted a few years back, for which we have:

The solo titles

  • Nova (’13-’15) – Jeph Loeb / Zeb Wells / Gerry Duggan / Ed McGuinness / Paco Medina / Carlo Barberi / David Baldeon / Federico Santagati / John Timms
  • Nova (’15-’16) – Sean Ryan / Cory Smith / John Timms
  • Nova (’16-’17) -Jeff Loveness / Ramon Perez

The Team Book

  • Champions (’16-’18) – Mark Waid / Jeremy Whitley / Jim Zub / Humberto Ramos / Jesús Saiz / Javier Piña / Paco Diaz / Sean Izaakse / Kevin Libranda

The 70s team with the same name

Unannounced Sales

Critical Role Fangs Flight

As always, it isn’t clear when the unannounced sales will end.

Critical Role from Dark Horse is currently on sale. That would be the comics based on the campaigns from the popular web series about Dungeons & Dragons campaigns… and this will take a moment to explain.

There’s an omnibus format that’s a little better value and a “regular”  collected edition sale. There are some OGNs/albums filed under the single issue format. (Hey, don’t look at us.)

Dark Horse still has discounts to their Star Wars line of comics:

Also on sale

And have a look at the $5 and under page.
